Seeking long term solutions in addition to short term gains.
An orthopaedic approach to the alleviation of pain using the correction of biomechanics, with manual therapy, education and exercises. This approach is solution focused and seeks to reduce pain by restoring the body to its optimal postion and creating solutions to sustain this. Whether you have muscle, joint or nerve pain, orthopaedic therapy can get to the root cause and give you the positive outcome you need.
A typical treatment:
What to wear
Relaxed and loose fitting clothing will make your treatment more comfortable but it doesn’t matter if that’s not possible. I understand that people often need to fit treatments around work and so there’s no need to worry.
Consultation
- Discussion about the problem, gathering information on previous injury or lifestyle that may have contributed to the issue and identifying your aims of treatment
Assessment
- identification of musculoskeletal imblances including:
- visual assessment
- palpation of soft tissue
- range of motion assessment
- Muscle testing for strength differences
- Nerve testing to identify impingement of nerve fibres
Treatment
- the combination of techniques to target specific muscles in order to allow them to resume back to resting length and improve the biomechanical movement of your body. This may include some of the following techniques:
- Muscle energergising techniques (MET) includues both Autogenic and Reciprocal Inhibition
- Specific Positioning Active Release (SPAR)- a highly precise form of Muscle Energising Technique (MET)
- Resisted Stretches
- Trigger point therapy (TPT)
- Traditional massage such as kneading, myofascial release (MFR), compressions etc
- Manipulation (used as a last resort after muscle release to correct joint alignment)
- Muscle activation exercises to reignite weak neuromuscular function
- Education to inform your understanding of how your body is currently functioning and what is needed to restore optimal position and movement
Reassessment
- Continuous reassessment during treatment to ensure the techniques are achieving the desired result, with alteration when neccessary to include additional techniques
Advice and information
- Recommended exercises and stretches required to strenghten your body, aiming to sustain improved biomechanical function
Whatever the origin of your pain, you can be assured that this systematic approach to treatment will put you on the route to recovery.
