Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD)
Typical symptoms of TMJD are clicking, popping, grinding, jaw pain and limitation in opening of the jaw. It can also lead to other symptoms that include neck pain and headaches/ migraine. Treatment of TMJD includes soft tissue release, gentle muscle energising technique (MET), gentle mobilisations . It also includes intraoral treatment and the release of surrounding muscles in the cervical spine (the neck) and front of the neck to ensure the best results possible.
Sciatica
Sciatica presents as a result of impingement of the sciatic nerve somewhere along its length. Pain can be debilitating and can radiate down to as far as the calf with numbness sometimes occurring in the foot. Whilst people commonly associate sciatica with disc protrusion, it can also be caused by impingement of the sciatic nerve elsewhere, including adjacent to the spine after exiting the spinal canal and in the gluteal area under piriformis. Assessment and treatment should commence at the spine to identify the possibility of disc involvement using the appropriate safety checks. Further treatment focuses on rebalancing the sacrum and pelvis, the spinal muscles and any others involved using a variety of techniques such as MET, stretches, nerve flossing (sliding). N.B. if your sciatic symptoms change to include pain down both legs and numbess between the legs or inner thighs, or NEW urinary or faecal incontinence, weakness in urination or erectile dysfunction this constitutes a medical emergency and you should present yourself at your nearest A&E as this could be Cauda Equina Syndrome for which you may need emergency surgery to prevent permant damage.
